Apparently Bombing Iran Would Be Even Crazier Than I Thought

Or so says Steve Clemons, writing that the Israeli security establishment told him that bombing Iran to end their nuclear programme would be a) nuts and b) unnecessary.

As I said earlier, bombing the Iranians makes absolutely no sense whatsoever from a standpoint of protecting American interests. I think myself that it doesn't make any sense from an Israeli standpoint either, but I can see that it might not look that way from Israel's point of view. If, as Clemons says, the Israelis think bombing Iran would be counterproductive, then the rationale for bombing this summer falls apart completely.

None of which is to say that it won't happen-this is the Bush crowd we're talking about, and it's all too easy for me to imagine them ginning up a "short victorious war" for domestic political purposes, and leaving the pieces to the next administration. After all, when you're already challenging Buchanan, Pierce, Johnson and Harding for the title of Worst President Ever, what's another futile war?
